I never particularly enjoyed commuting to work. That’s not to say that the alternative…never leaving the four walls of my apartment doesn’t leave a lot to be desired. I moved last July from a studio, which didn’t have room for a proper desk. And I have to say one of the main reasons for my move was to have room for work.
For a New York apartment, I’m pretty happy with the WFH space I carved out for myself and I am very productive at home. It’s just me here, so the quiet time does lead to being able to get a lot of work done. Of course I miss people in general, but this isn’t such a bad corner to sit in.
The desk is CB2. What else is new? I hadn’t wanted to spend a lot on the desk, and wanted something along the IKEA lines, but with delays in shipping, etc. I finally caved and got the one I really wanted. I also decided that for something I would be using at least 8 hours a day 5 days a week, I may as well get something sturdy. The dimensions are perfect, I love the high gloss finish. The storage drawers aren’t especially large, but they fit everything I need.
While we’re on the CB2 train, the lamp is also from there. I don’t actually need a lamp on the desk, but I saw it and fell in love and even though I didn’t have a space for it, I got it anyway, only to realize it fits the workspace perfectly.
Rounding out the desk accessories, the pencil holder I made in pottery class years ago. It’s not well made, but I love the glaze so much and it’s not one my studio still makes. (I’m also probably the only one who would notice, no one else gets close enough). I was working from home for about a week when I realized I really needed a proper mouse and not just the laptop trackpad. I love this sleek one. The mouse pad is from Etsy. I was influenced by Chris Loves Julia to buy it. It is so soft, and very comfortable to use. Oh, and isn’t the mini calendar just the cutest? It’s from Inkello who makes the best letterpress pieces.
My back was thrilled when I invested in a proper desk chair upon my move. Before that I had a great combo of couch/plastic folding chair in my studio apartment and I am far too old for that. I like that the chair is real leather and isn’t visually bulky.
The clock was a saga. I really really wanted this one. But, it’s a ticking clock and I thought that perhaps that would drive me bananas in my silent apartment. In the end, pretty beat out practical on this battle. I needed something to fill up the blank space above the desk, and a clock is very on-point with the office vibe. And I was thrilled to learn once it arrived, THAT I CANNOT HEAR ANY TICKING! Of course I wish I got it even sooner!
