I had a great time dreaming of my perfect tween bedroom last week. So much so that I wanted to see if I could come up with a plan for a boy’s room too. Having never been a boy and not having any children, it was a real challenge for me to dream up this space. Plus, let’s face it, there are way more fun options for girls. Boys are hard! It was a fine line between being too adult and looking like the color wheel threw up. But, I’m happy with where I landed.
Bed: As an adult woman I would love to have this gorgeous wood and leather number, but it works just as easily for a preteen boy. It’s simple enough to go with both “boy” and “teen” styles and is super luxe with that leather headboard. Plus the solid wood base looks sturdy…never trust middle schoolers to be gentle.
Nightstands: I love the rich color of these green nightstands. Plus they have plenty of storage for anything from (comic) books to baseball cards to gum and candy. Boys have just as much stuff as girls and they need storage!
Sconces: Okay, it’s slightly cliché that I’m doing primary color sconces for a boy’s room. But, like the girl’s room from last week, I’m not necessarily trying to push the envelope here. Red sconces are FUN.
Rug: I doubt this star rug would be able to make the transition from preteen to teenage room, but I say put the fun, cute, playful rug in the space while you can. It’s joyful while still being neutral enough to ground the room. It adds levity to a room that could quickly skew too old with its neutral furniture.
Dresser: I think there’s a temptation to go dark furniture to lend a more “masculine” energy in any male’s bedroom, but why? I love the classic shape of this dresser and the lighter tone of the wood keeps the bedroom from skewing too old and stuffy.
Mirror: I may not have ever been a boy and I may not have any sons, but I do have brothers. And if they taught me anything, it’s that men (and teens and tweens!) require a mirror just as much as the fairer sex. No middle school boy is not checking themselves out. I love the almost porthole-style of this mirror and I think any tween boy would love it in their space.
Desk: Look, it’s well documented that I like campaign furniture. I love that it’s fairly readily available these days, albeit predominantly in the children’s section. I’m not mad about it though and in my dream scenario, a colorful campaign piece is going in this boy’s room.
Desk Chair: Let’s add some more fun color to this room! I was tempted to go with a leather desk chair, but if you can reject neutrals in any place, it’s a kid’s bedroom. This mustard chair is the perfect spot to sit in and study.
Flag: Vintage flags are cool. It’s a fact, don’t argue with me.
